The Trail Smoke Eaters regrouped after losing 5 - 1 to the Centennials Friday night and rebounded with a 6 - 2 victory Saturday to take a 3 - 1 series lead in the Interior Division quarterfinals.
Six different Smokies scored for Trail in a game that saw the home team Centennials outshot by a margin of 51 to 44.
Joel Barrett opened the scoring just 1:41 into the game with his team leading 3rd goal of the playoffs and 6 seconds later Cam Brodie tied his regular season tally with a goal shot from outside the blueline that suprised Cents netminder Brad McInnis. The Smokies held off a Merritt 2 man advantage in the period but Casey Pierro-Zabotel would cut the Smokies lead to one with an even strength marker midway through the period.
The Smokies would have 2 chances with a 2 man advantage in the second period and made good on both of them. Casey Shade scored 5 on 3 just 3 minutes into the middle frame and David Arduin scored on the ensuing 5 on 4 powerplay to put Trail up 4 - 1. Ryan Bulach got another with a 2 man advantage late in the period to make it 5 - 1 after 2 periods of play.
The Smokies went up 6 - 1 on another powerplay goal by Alex Greenlay early in the third and Centennials Stephen Cavanagh got one more for Merritt to round out the scoring. Trail was 4 for 8 with the extra man while the Cents went 0 for 4.
The Centennials one / two punch of Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Wade McLeod showed they are both more than just scoring machines as Pierro-Zabotel took on Captain Alex Greenlay late in the third period and McLeod had a go with Matt Turner at the final buzzer.
The Smokies have an opportunity to put this series to rest Monday night at the Cominco Arena in Trail. Game 6 (if neccessary) will be played back in Merritt on Tuesday Mar. 13.
