SMOKIES COME OUT ON TOP IN HOME AND HOME WITH WEST KELOWNA

After the home and home series with the West Kelowna the Smokies have leaped frogged into third place past the Warriors.  The Smokies have 38 points to the Warrior’s 37.

After a difficult early part of December where the Smokies slipped into fourth place they have returned after the Xmas break with the winning mindset that led them to their success early in the season.  With their 4-0 win on home ice last night over the Warriors the Smokies earned three of four points in the home and home series.

Although coming out of the blocks a little slow in the first period Trail took a 1-0 lead into the dressing room on a power play goal by Kale Howarth.  It was Howarth’s 22nd goal of the season assisted on by Mitch Stapley, his 23rd assist of the season.

In the second period the Smokies scored three unanswered goals to take a 4 – 0 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. Kale Howarth scored his second goal of the game and 23rd of the season at 10:42 and assisted on again, by Mitch Stapley.  At 12:28 Andre Ghantous scored his 3rd goal of the season assisted on by, Captain, Connor Brown Maloski and Ross Armour.  It was Trail’s second power play marker in the game.  At 15:14 Spencer McLean put the Smokies up 4-0 when he scored his 8th of the season with Blaine Caton and Ryan Moon assisting on the goal.  The second period was penalty filled with a total of 96 minutes in penalties handed out, mostly attributable to the frustration of the Warriors.

Penalty Filled Second

A key factor in the game was Trail’s power play that went cold in December.  The Smokies capitalized on 2 of their 6 chances on the night.   The Warriors were 0 for 3.

It was a clean sweep for the Smokies in the three star selections in the game.  Kale Howarth was named first star, with two goals in the game, Linden Marshall second star with the shutout and Spencer McLean third star.  Fortis Energy Player of the Game was Korbyn Chabot.

Celebrating Win

The Smokies travel to Penticton on Wednesday before returning home next Friday to face Salmon Arm in another home and home series with the Silverbacks.  Game time at the Cominco Arena next Friday, January 6, is 7:30 PM.
