SMOKIES EARN SPLIT AT SHOWCASE WITH THRILLING O/T WIN

Desperately needing a win on Sunday at the BCHL showcase to keep pace in the Interior Division, the Smokies came up with a thrilling double O/T win against the Victoria Grizzlies.

Despite out-shooting the Grizzlies 14-4 in the first period the Smokies found themselves down 1-0 at period’s end.  Victoria’s Jake Stevens scored the only goal of the period at 7:06.  It was a power play goal.

In the second, Victoria took a 2-0 lead when Cory Hatcher scored a second power play goal.  Trail’s hard work paid off when they cut the Grizzly lead in half on a goal by Joshua Laframboise at the 3:17 mark.  Assists went to Luke Santerno and Kale Howarth.  A little over two minutes later Kale Howarth knotted the score at 2 for the Smokies with an unassisted goal.  Before period’s end Victoria’s Jamie Rome put the Grizzlies ahead 3-2.

Trail kept up the pressure in the third and at 12:02 Ross Armour tied the game, assisted on by Andre Ghantous.  What almost proved to be the winning goal, Luke Santerno put the Smokies ahead 4-3 at 15:04 of the period.  It would stay that way until Victoria tied the  game at 4 with 26 seconds left in the game.

The teams played four on four hockey through 5 minutes of the first O/T period and solved nothing.  With the teams playing 3 on 3 in the second O/T period Tyson Slater of the Smokies scored at 2:23 of the period to give Trail the thrilling win.  Luke Santernon assisted on the goal.

On the night, or morning, as the game started at 10:00 AM, Trail out-shot the Grizzlies 42 – 25.  Linden Marshall in net for the Smokies took the win.  Joshua Lamframboise of the Smokies was named 1st Star of the game, Cody Van Lierop of the Grizzlies was named 2nd Star and Luke Santerno of the Smokies was named 3rd Star.  Fortis Energy Player of the Game was Luke Santerno.  Trail went 0/3 on the power play while Victoria went 2/3.

In their first game of the showcase the Smokies suffered a 5-2 loss to the Powell River Kings.  In that game the second period proved to be Trail’s undoing as they were outshot 21 – 11 and outscored 3 – 0.  The Smokies played Powell River even in both the first and third period.  In the first the teams played to a 0-0 draw with each team having 10 shots on net.  In the third period the teams played to a 2-2 draw with each team having 8 shots on net.  Kale Howarth and Jack Sitzman had Trail’s goals in the game with Ross Armour and Joshua Lamframboise assisting on Howarth’s marker and Andre Ghantous and Luke Santerno assisting on Sitzman’s goal.

First Star of the game went to the King’s Ted McGeen,  the Second Star went to Joshua Laframboise of the Smokies and the Third Star was Cam Donaldson of the Kings.  Smokies Lamframboise was named a star in both games on the weekend.  He was named first star in Trai’s O/T win over Victoria.

The Smokies return home on Sunday night and travel to Prince George for a game on Thursday night.   Saturday, the Smokies face  the Vees in Penticton before returning home for a game at the Cominco Arena on Wednesday, October 5 against the Merritt Centennials.   Game time is 7:00 PM.
