SMOKIES LOSE IN SALMON ARM – RACE TIGHTENS IN INTERIOR DIVISION

The Smokies celebrated 10 times on November 8th but only twice last night in Salmon Arm.

It was payback time at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm Saturday night as the Silverbacks defeated the Smokies 7-2.  In their last meeting at the Cominco Arena in Trail on November 8 the Smokies beat Salmon Arm 10 – 3.  The Silverbacks obviously had this in mind when they jumped into a 5-0 first period lead last night on goals by Jared Turcotte, Haydn Hopkins, Elijiah Barriga, Mitch Skapski and Josh Blanchard.  The Smokies didn’t seem ready and for the game, something that has plagued the team this season.  When they got on track the Smokies played Salmon Arm to second and third period draws.

In the second period Blaine Caton put the Smokies on the board at 4:36 with assists going to Mitchell Stapley and Andre Ghantous.  Carson Bolduc of Salmon Arm made it 6-1 at 13:11 of the period.

In the third the teams traded goals again.  Connor Brown Maloski scored at 18:03 with Josh Lamframboise and Kale Howarth assisting.  Elijiah Barriga then makde it 7 – 2 for the Backs with a goal at 18:57.

All three stars in the game went to Salmon Arm with Carson Bolduc earning first star, Josh Blanchard second star and Carter Cochrane third star.  Fortis Energy Player of the game was the Back’s Mitch Skapski.

Trail’s loss combined with Salmon Arm, West Kelowna and Merritt wins have tightened the race in the Interior Division.  Vernon is in second place with 33 points, followed by Trail in third with 31 points, then Merritt with 30 points and West Kelowna and Salmon Arm in fifth and sixth place respectively with 27 points.

The Smokies return home for an afternoon tilt with the Powell River Kings on Sunday at the Cominco Arena.   Game time is 3:00 PM.
