FORMER SMOKE EATERS, LUCCHINI & BALTUS RECEIVE AWARDS

NCAA, Michigan Tech hockey team passed out it’s annual awards and former Smoke Eaters Jake Lucchini and Brent Baltus both received awards.

Jake Lucchini was given the Norbert Matovich Memorial Award as the Huskies most outstanding freshman.  Lucchini was fourth among freshmen in the WCHA with 11 points and earned a WCHA All-Rookie Team citation for his efforts.  Lucchini played three seasons with the Smoke Eaters.  In 2012/13 he played in 55 games and had 5 goals and 3 assists.  In 2013/14 in 55 games he had 8 goals and 18 assists.  His final year with the Smoke Eaters, 2014/15, in 58 games he had 35 goals and 48 assists for 83 points and was fourth in league scoring.

Brent Baltus won the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award.  Baltus, a Nanaimo native, collected 9 goals and 19 points while being penalized just three times in 37 outings.   Baltus earned WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award and was named to the league’s all-academic team.  Baltus played for the Smoke Eaters in 2011/12 and 2012/13.  In his first season he had 14 goals and 16 assists.  His second season saw him collect 24 goals and 27 assists for 51 points.
