TRAIL, B.C. – The Trail Smoke Eaters used a three-goal 2nd period and a two-goal performance from Spencer McLean to help them to a 5-2 victory over the Wenatchee Wild on Wednesday night at the Trail Memorial Centre.

Spencer McLean scored twice in the game while Braeden Tuck, Carter Jones and Owen Ozar added singles as the Smoke Eaters picked up back-to-back wins on home ice and end Wenatchee’s nine-game winning streak with a 5-2 win at the Trail Memorial Centre.

There was no shortage of scoring chances in the opening period as the Smoke Eaters jumped ahead and opened the scoring at the 2:57 mark of the 1st period. Hayden Rowan sent a pass to the middle of the zone that went through to the net and off the left pad of Wild netminder Austin Park with Spencer McLean finding the rebound in front and burying the puck past the glove side for his 4th goal of the season and a 1-0 Smoke Eaters lead.

Each side saw their fair share of chances in the offensive zone, including a pair of posts hit by Tyler Ghirardosi before the Wild knotted the game at 1-1 at the 15:44 mark of the opening frame. PJ Fletcher centered from the left wing and found the stick of Blake Bargar in front of the goal as he deflected the pass by the glove side of Smoke Eaters goaltender Adam Marcoux to tie the game into the 2nd period.

The middle frame was an eventful one that started with the Smoke Eaters getting their lead back at the 1:15 mark of the 2nd frame. Park came out of his goal to play the puck to his blocker side before Kent Johnson stripped it away and centered a pass off a stick for Braeden Tuck as he slapped in his 11th goal of the season and made it a 2-1 game in favour of the Smoke Eaters and ending the night for Park as Cal Sandquist took over in between the pipes.

Under two minutes later, McLean added his second of the game at the 2:59 mark of the period with a power play marker. Diarmad DiMurro let a shot go from the right point that was redirected in past the glove side of Sandquist for his second goal of the game and extended the Smoke Eaters lead to 3-1.

Trail added to their lead at the 9:22 mark on a strange sequence that saw the Wild come down the ice with a shorthanded opportunity from Lucas Sowder that was waved off by the referee and brought the Smoke Eaters down the ice the other way. Sandquist made a terrific save on Hayden Rowan before the puck was sent to the blocker side and Carter Jones lifting a shot over the blocker shoulder for his 12th goal of the season and a 4-1 advantage on the power play.

Matt Gosiewski closed the gap a bit with a power play goal of his own at the 11:31 mark of the 2nd period off a blocked shot. Jacob Modry had his try from the left circle blocked with the puck spilling out for Gosiewski at the top of the crease as he whacked in the power play goal on the glove side and made the score 4-2 into the 3rd period.

Owen Ozar closed the scoring with the lone marker in the final period of play as a turnover saw Tyler Ghirardosi left a slap shot go from the left side that was stopped by Sandquist but the rebound went off of Ozar and in for his 6th goal of the season and regained the Smoke Eaters lead at 5-2 at the 3:25 mark of the final period.

Adam Marcoux had a terrific night in goal for the Smoke Eaters, stopping 28 of the 30 shots he faced in between the pipes for his 12th win of the season while Austin Park started the game, allowing two goals on nine shots before giving way to Cal Sandquist, who stopped 15 of the 18 shots he faced in his 6th loss of the season.
