Preview – Smoke Eaters host Spruce Kings, Looking To Get Back In The Win Column

The Smoke Eaters continue their homestand with a test against the Prince George Spruce Kings as the teams face off for the first time this season.

Season series versus Prince George

Nov. 18 Prince George at Trail 7:00 pm PST
Jan. 27 Trail at Prince George 7:00 pm PST
Jan. 28 Trail at Prince George 7:00 pm PST
Jan. 29 Trail at Prince George 3:00 pm PST
Feb. 4 Prince George at Trail 7:00 pm PST

The Smoke Eaters are coming off a tough weekend of results where a shorthanded side took the Vees to a Shootout and then had zero puck luck on a Sunday afternoon 4-1 loss to Salmon Arm. The good news going into this weekend is that the Smoke Eaters are mostly healthy after being decimated last weekend. Makway and Tisdale are still out however but the Smoke Eaters get Schenk, Fechko and Disher all back from illness or injury. Schenk’s absence was noticed more so in the face off circle where the Smoke Eaters struggled, while Disher and Fechko’s abilities to put the puck in the net as of late also hurt the Smoke Eaters as the weekend went on. Despite earning just one point last weekend the Smoke Eaters had multiple chances in each game where had they scored instead of hitting a post, would have put themselves in a position to win both hockey games. That’s surely one of the positives that they’ll be leaning on going into another tough weekend against Prince George and Merritt tomorrow.

Smoke Eaters leading scorers:

Parsons (7-8-15)
Remissong (8-6-14)
Fechko (5-9-14)
Hunter (3-10-13)
Cobetto-Roy (4-8-12)

The Spruce Kings come to Trail off a midweek win against Alberni Valley On Wednesday night, winning 5-2. Prior to that Prince George split their weekend set with Merritt, losing 3-2 on Friday and winning the second night in a 7-5 barnburner. The Spruce Kings come in with an 11-5-1-1 record good enough for third in the interior conference. John Herrington is back and leading the way again for Prince George. The Hudson Hope native is off to another strong start to his third season in the BCHL, scoring 11 goals and adding 6 assists. Prince George also brings with them another strong goaltending tandem, as Jordan Fairlie sits tied for third in wins and boasts one of the best goals against averages in the league.

Spruce Kings leading scorers:

Herrington (11-6-17)
Makow (8-6-14)
Primerano (3-11-14)
Stockfish (4-8-12)
McGregor-Bennett (4-8-12)
