Preview: Smoke Eaters wrap up three game weekend in Surrey against the Eagles

The Trail Smoke Eaters head to South Surrey Arena Sunday afternoon looking for a eighth straight win as they take on the Surrey Eagles.

The Smoke Eaters wrap up there 3-in-3 with a match against the Eagles, following wins over Cowichan on Friday and a win over the Grizzlies Saturday in Victoria.

Regular season vs Surrey

October 13th @ South Surrey Arena 4pm

November 30th @ Cominco Arena 7pm

Last year 2W-0L / Last five years 6W-2L-1OTL

The Smoke Eaters will look to take all six points from their west coast trip as they come in winners of their last seven games. It was another strong showing from the Smokies last night in Victoria winning 5-1 and taking the season series over the Grizzlies. It was far from easy though as the Smoke Eaters had to battle the loss of Murray who was assessed a five minute major and a game misconduct late in the 2nd period. His teammates came to his aid however killing the entire penalty off and seeing out the game in the 3rd.

Johnson continues to lead the league in points with 24 points and in assists with 16. Mike Colella sits right behind him in league scoring with 22 thanks to another assist last night. Colella also leads the league in goals with 11 through thirteen games. DiMurro who had a goal and two assists last night now leads all defenceman in the BCHL with 16 points. All three of those players continue their point streak that is now at 7 games, while Ozar has extended his to 8 games.

The Smoke Eaters powerplay took another boost last night going 2/5 and increasing their overall percentage to 24%, good enough for 3rd overall. The penalty kill was perfect last night and sits 7th in the league going into this afternoons game.

The Eagles, coached by former Smoke Eaters head coach Cam Keith, are coming off a loss to the Coquitlam Express on Friday night where they fell 2-1 to their Mainland division foes. The Eagles are also in the midst of a five game losing skid they would love to end this afternoon against a high flying Smoke Eaters team. The Smokies hold the special teams advantage as the Eagles powerplay has struggled to find the net over the opening month and a half of the season. The Eagles last win came over the Langley Rivermen where they put 7 past the Rivermen for a 7-1 win. After being the lone team to miss the playoff last year a young Surrey team is slowly chipping away at the season with 4W-9L.

Puck drop is set for 4pm in Surrey as the Smoke Eaters look to bring 8 straight wins back to Cominco Arena ahead of Friday’s home game. The pre game show start at 3:50 with coaches interviews with Ben Phillips on HockeyTV and Mixlr.
