RECAP: Power play explodes as Smokies top Cents 9-2

The Smoke Eaters special teams were the story as the Smokies notch 7 power plays en route to a 9-2 win over the Merritt Centennials.

It started before the puck even dropped as the Centennials took a warm up violation, a penalty that they would regret as the Smoke Eaters opened the scoring 1:03. It was Philippe Lapointe who took a cross ice pass from Kent Johnson and made no mistake, 1-0 Smokies. Lapointe would score again just two minutes later on a similar play on the power play making it 2-0. Johnson then scored on a shot from the blue line at 5:43, again on the power play. Tyler Ghirardosi continued his goal streak, now at four games, making it 4-0 on another power play. Powell Connor let rip from the point for his fourth of the year also a power play goal making it 5-0. The Cents would get one goal in the first as Josh Van Unen found a rebound in front of Logan Terness to make it 5-1. The Smoke Eaters would restore the five goal lead and finish the first 6/6 on the man advantage as Owen Ozar scored with just over two minutes to go in the first period.

In the second, the teams traded goals as the Cents got a power play goal of their own as Olson Werenka’s shot from the blue line got through making it 6-2. Lapointe would close out the period with his Hat Trick goal (on the power play) with just 1.8 seconds left on the clock he took a cross ice pass from Johnson and make it 7-2 after 40 minutes.

In the third the Smoke Eaters rolled all four lines and controlled the game. Braden Costello picked up his 7th of the year as he tapped in a great pass from Jaden Senkoe making it 8-2. Then on a breakaway Micheal Colella went top corner glove side on Tanner Marshall making it 9-2 for the Smoke Eaters.

The Smoke Eaters scored 7 power play goals on the night as they set a new season high for goals in a game. They’ll now get set to host the Surrey Eagles Saturday back at the Trail Memorial Centre.
