RECAP: Smoke Eater Score Eight in Blowout Win Over Bucks

The showed they could be dominant during the third period on Sunday night against the Bucks, but on Wednesday evening from opening puck drop to the final horn it was all Smoke Eaters in a dominant 8-3 win over the Cranbrook Bucks.

It started early, just 2:29 into the first period as Chase Dafoe scored his first of the season and first as Smoke Eater captain by redirecting a shot from Ethan Willoughby past Nathan Airey for the 1-0 lead. Four minutes later Jordan Hendry tallied his first of the year just as the powerplay expired, with a seeing eye wrister to make it 2-0! The Bucks would answer back a minute and seventeen seconds later to get within one. But that would be as close as they came with Noah Wakeford restoring the two goal advantage moments later. Wakeford put home an errant shot from Helliwell on the powerplay to make it 3-1 after twenty minutes. The Smoke Eaters took their first lead and their first powerplay goal of the year into the locker room.

In the second it was pedal to the metal for the West Kootenay boys who added four more in impressive fashion. First, local product Zach Park scored his first BCHL career goal on a beautiful one timer to make it 4-1 less than three minutes into the period. Two minutes late Coalson Wolford added his first  of two on the night with a powerplay redirection on the shot from Helliwell to make it 5-1. He’d score again as the ice opened up in the middle frame on a odd man rush with Szeto and Wakeford for his second Trail Smoke Eater goal of the night at 11:11 of the second period. Quinn Disher would round out the period with a 2-on-1 goal where he kept and went blocker side on the Cranbrook netminder making it 7-1 and putting this game far out of reach for the Bucks.

The Smoke Eaters were in cruise control for the third as Brady Hunter added his first BCHL and Trail Smoke Eaters goal 3:48 into the final frame, making it 8-1 at the time. The Bucks would strike back twice however in the third to finish the game 8-3, something the Smoke Eaters will look at as a mental lapse, something they can’t afford to do if they want to beat Penticton on tomorrow night. The Smoke Eaters collect their first win of the season and their first franchise win over the Bucks. Meanwhile Head Coach and General Manager Tim Fragle also collects his first BCHL and Smoke Eaters win from the bench.

Logan Terness picks up his first win stopping 27/30 shots. Captain Chase Dafoe was named the third star with a goal and an assist. Quinn Disher was named second star with one goal and two assists while Coalson Wolford returned from injury to score two goals and earn the first star. Brady Hunter was named the Fortis Energy Player of the Game with a goal and an assist.

The Smoke Eaters will look to duplicate this performance on Thursday night when they play the Penticton Vees.
