Recap – Smoke Eaters battled back but lose late to Spruce Kings

The Smoke Eaters eliminated the 3-0 deficit they found themselves in after the first period, but get scored on late and fell 5-3 the the Spruce Kings on Friday night.

The Smoke Eaters started the game by doing the one thing they didn’t want to do, and that was be shorthanded against the Spruce Kings. The Spruce Kings made them pay as well scoring twice on the powerplay in the open 8 minutes to take a 2-0 lead. They’d beat Bailey Monteith once more in the first just after the halfway mark to put the Smoke Eaters in a hole. But Monteith and the Smoke Eaters turned it around over the next forty minutes.

It started with Brady Hunter adding his third goal of the year with a Smoke Eater powerplay goal to get the boys in orange and white in the board.

They followed that up with Jackson Krill’s first of the year after Quinn Disher put in the work to create the 2-on-1 and give Krill the opportunity to score. That made it 3-2 in the second period.

The Smoke Eaters had to then work to keep the game within one as again the officials continued to parade the Smoke Eaters to the penalty box. But the PK and Monteith came up big in the second with some big saves and crucial back to back kills to send this to the third at 3-2. It was almost 3-3 as Disher was a menace on the PK and could of had four goals tonight the way he played and created for the Smoke Eaters.

In the third Monteith continued to out perform Aaron Trotter with a remarkable diving blocker save to keep the game tied at 3. That and many other saves gave the Smoke Eaters a chance in this game. The Smoke Eaters got their equalizer courtesy of Connor Michaud on the powerplay to complete the comeback and tie the game at 3 with 6 minutes left.

But the Smoke Eaters were assessed two decisive penalties late giving Prince George their seventh and eighth opportunities of the night, compared to the Smoke Eaters three, to score late and take the two points.

The Smoke Eaters will look for their revenge Saturday night back at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena as they look to split the weekend here in Prince George.
