Recap – Smoke Eaters Lose A Thriller Against the Wild

The Smoke Eaters welcome in the Wenatchee Wild on Thursday night and fans definitely got their money’s worth as it took a shootout to decide the night.

As they have the previous two games the Smoke Eaters struck first. After being hemmed into their own zone in the early part of the game they began to push back and would score through Cam Moger, who tallied his first of the preseason and the Smoke Eaters first powerplay goal as well.

The Smoke Eaters would take that lead to the second period if not for some great goaltending by Evan Fradette who made many spectacular saves on the night. His counterpart Hank Levy was just as good for Wenatchee. But early on Fradette was thrown into a 2-on-0 break and had to come up big for the Smoke Eaters

Into the second period the game opened up, a coaches nightmare but a fan’s dream come true as the teams traded chances and goals the entire 20 minute span. The Wild would score two goals just 31 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead after Cade Stibbe beat Fradette with a perfect short side top corner shot to get Wenatchee on the board. Then with the Smoke Eaters looking to hit back quickly they got caught leading to a 3-on-1 that the Wild took advantage of. The smoke Eaters answered later in the period through Josh Schenk who put home a rebound on the Even Bushy shot from the right point. But the 2-2 tie was short lived as Owen Bohn scored 32 seconds later on a breakaway to restore the Wild’s lead. Trail added their second powerplay goal of the night late in the second thanks to Coalson Wolford the tie the game at 3.

In the third the Smoke Eaters would once again take the advantage on the night scoring prior to the midway point of the third as Jordan Hendry’s point shot made it through the crowd and past Levy. The Wild would answer a few minutes later on 5-on-3 powerplay of their own to tie the game one final time. Overtime was entertaining but solved nothing, leading to a shootout where Owen Bohn scored the go ahead goal and Levy stopped Wolford to secure the win for the visiting team.

The Smoke Eaters have Friday off before hosting the Cranbrook Bucks on Saturday night and then Canada’s National Women’s Team on Monday.
