RECAP: Smoke Eaters roll past the Kings in a 6-2 win

The Smoke Eaters split the season series with the Powell River Kings, as they take a 6-2 win Friday night at Hap Parker Arena.

The Smoke Eaters came out early and took the game to the Kings as just 2:47 in it was Owen Ozar put one past Derek Krall to open the scoring. Ozar’s 12th of the year extended his point streak to 11 games as Philippe Lapointe and Tyler Ghiradosi also picked up assists. The Smokies made it 2-0 as Walker Erickson scored his fourth of the year on a great move past Krall at 5:07 of the first. The Kings made it a one goal game however as on the power play Jacob Badal would put home a rebound to beat Matteo Paler-Chow, making it 2-1 after the first period.

In the second the Smoke Eaters kept up the pressure in a period full of firsts and milestones. Firstly Corey McCann picked up his first in the BCHL goal with a great shot from the point making it 3-1 at 4:59 of the second. Less than five minutes later after sustained pressure, Kent Johnson would score his 20th of the season on the power play as his shot from the left side made it past Krall. The Smoke Eaters weren’t done there as with just 47s to go in the period Ozar won a puck battle in the left corner, found Tyler Ghirardosi at the side of the net who sauced a perfect pass to Powell Conner to make it 5-1. The assist was also Ghirardosi’s 100th BCHL point as he picked up three helpers on the night and is up to 21 points this season.

In the third the Kings made a goal tender change as Thomas Wardle would come in to replace Krall, but he couldn’t keep the Smoke Eaters off the board either. At 2:07 it was Jackson Murphy-Johsnon who got his first BCHL goal as well, as he came down the left flank of the kings zone a went short side on Wardle to make it 6-1. The Smoke Eaters would allow one more Dawson Mckay was all alone at the back post for a tap in to make it 6-2, and that’s where things would finish.

The Smoke Eaters now improve to 17-1-1-1 over the last twenty games with tonight’s win. They have also won four in a row and have points in nine straight games.

They’re back at it Saturday night against the top team in the Island division, the Nanaimo Clippers at 7pm from Frank Crane Arena.
