RECAP: Smoke Eaters take all two points in 4-1 win over the Vipers

The Smoke Eaters continued their strong play versus the Vipers in a 4-1 win Wednesday night to wrap up their 2019 road schedule.

The first period was as expected between these two divisional rivals, with not much to separate the two. The Vipers did open the scoring with a power play goal at 13:09 as Cameron MacDonald would score his 10th of the year to give the Vipers the advantage after twenty minutes.

In the second the Smoke Eaters didn’t wait long to tie things up. Just 57s in Max Kryski won the faceoff to Jaden Senkoe who picked up his second of the year to make it 1-1. Then just 40s later Kent Johnson walked through the Vipers players and back-handed one past James Porter made it 2-1 Smoke Eaters. The goal would stand for the eventual game winner as Johnson scored his 25th of the year. Later in the second Walker Erickson picked off a pass at center ice and caught the Vipers in transition. He took a back hand shot from the left wall of the Vipers zone that forced a kick save by Porter, who kicked it right to Braden Costello for his eighth of the year at 13:27. The Smokies with a record of 17-1-1 when leading after two periods went to the break up 3-1.

In the third the Vipers pushed but weren’t able to beat Logan Terness, who picked up his 16th win of the season. The Smoke Eaters would add an empty net goal by the stick of Philippe Lapointe to seal it at 4-1 late in the third.

The Smoke Eaters have now won three straight games verse the Vipers and will look to finish 2019 on a high note when they host the Cowichan Valley Capitals Friday night back at Cominco Arena.
