RECAP: Smoke Eaters take it in the shootout, now winners of eight straight

It wasn’t pretty but some great goaltending on either side made it a fun game to watch as the Smoke Eaters took the Eagles to a shootout to win their eighth straight game.

The Smokies, playing their third game in two and a half days opened the scoring just 2:37 in as Connor Sweeney would get his first BCHL goal as he redirected the slap pass from Powell Connor to give the Smoke Eaters the lead after 20 minutes. The Smoke Eaters had some chances to extend the lead but Cal Schell was strong in net for the Eagles.

The Smoke Eaters fired 19 shots on the Eagles net in the middle frame but came out of that period down a goal. The Eagles would get goals from Schiavon and Alami to take a 2-1 lead to the second intermission.

The Smokies however came out with a determined effort in the third and were rewarded at 7:19 of the third as Colella would rip one on the powerplay to tie things up at 2. The Smoke Eaters then had a breakaway and a late powerplay but couldn’t solve Schell who faced 45 shots in the Eagles net.

Two break away’s later and a powerplay in the overtime frame solved nothing for the Smoke Eaters who had all the possession had to take things to a shootout. Logan Terness who stopped 37 of 39 shots tonight then stopped all three shooters to win the game for the Smoke Eaters. Kent Johnson made a phenomenal move once again to get the shootout winner to give the Smokies their 8th straight win heading home to Trail.

The Smoke Eaters now will rest up and get set for their first home game since the 22nd of September as they host the Nanaimo Clippers  back at Cominco on Friday October 18th. Get your tickets and support the boys who bring with them an eight game win streak.
