Recap – Smoke Eaters Show Strong In Home Opener But Fall Late To The Bucks

It’s was another strong battle between the Smoke Eaters and Bucks in front of a packed Cominco Arena, as the Bucks score late to take the game 3-1.

The Smoke Eaters and Bucks traded chances in the opening period, with the Smoke Eaters eager to get ahead early against their Kootenay rivals. The first period was stalled however and the flow of the game disrupted after a Bucks player had to be helped off the ice after a hard collision with Smoke Eater forward Judah Makway. Luckily the need for a stretcher and the extra medical staff was all precautionary and the Bucks defenceman was, for the most part, not seriously hurt and was okay. After the restart the Bucks would take advantage as Jarrod Smith took the drop pass from Kellan Hjartarson and beat Smoke Eater netminder Teagan Kendrick under the arm for the opening goal.

Jumping ahead to the second the Smoke Eaters found themselves in a familiar place against the Bucks, and that will be their own missed opportunities, as the chances there to not only tie the game but take a lead as well. Eventually it came to Nic Remissong to tie the game late in the second period and score the first goal on home ice this season, as he tipped a shot from Trey Fechko on the powerplay to level the playing field.

In the third the game opened up a bit and again the Smoke Eaters found themselves with an opportunity or two missed to take the lead. The Bucks however had just as good as chances but the finally capitalized on those chances, scoring two goals 17 seconds apart as they forced errors and jumped on loose pucks. It’s not a unfamiliar storyline for the Smoke Eaters but one that hurts given the 50-55 minutes of good hockey they played. They’ll feel they played the right way and gave themselves a chance to win this hockey game, but the Bucks, opportunistic once again coach the Smoke Eaters home opener. These two teams will do it all over again Saturday night in Cranbrook as the Smoke Eaters will look to ruin the bucks home opener.
